New species - Pied-billed Grebe
Monday, October 10, 2011
Spotted the Grebe while birding in Crackatuxet Cove, Edgartown. The Pied-billed Grebe is a first for me. A very tiny diving bird that spends almost all its life in the water. It’s toes are lobed, so it does not have true webbed feet.
I almost did not see the bird it is VERY small, I was chasing a river otter along the shore. These photographs push the limits of my technique and equipment. I almost wadded into the cove but the bottom was so full of muck I would have gotten stuck.
It caught two fish over the 30 min. I watched.
